Two common infections in the mouth are
canker sores and fever blisters, also called
cold sores or herpes. Often people do not make a
difference between them; however it is important to know what
has erupted in or around the mouth in order to treat it right.
A fever blister and a canker sore have different causes.

What
are Fever Blisters?
Fever blisters, also called cold sores, are
blisters filled with fluid and usually erupt on the lips or between
lips and nose, outside the mouth, as opposed to canker sores
that occur inside the mouth. They can occur within hours and are
very painful, lasting up to 10 days. Many people report that the
outbreak of the painful blisters is usually introduced by a tingling
sensation and burning pain in the mouth area.
Fever blisters are often
referred to as Herpes labialis. Herpes is a viral
infection. Open herpes blisters can spread from person to person.
When a person catches the oral herpes simplex virus (HSV 1) for the fist
time, the fever blisters will usually erupt inside the mouth. This
infection is called “gingivostomatitis”.
This
infection usually takes place in the early childhood and causes a fever
and swollen lymph nodes in the child. Most people catch the oral herpes
simplex virus by their early twenties.
In
the US over 70 percent of the population has the herpes simplex virus.
However, that does not mean that 70 percent also suffer from the
outbreak of the virus. A huge number of people just carries the virus
and can also spread it; however the virus itself will never affect their
lives. In fact only 30 percent of the population actually suffers from
the symptoms.
What
causes Fever Blisters?
If a person carries the herpes virus, the
virus can break out any time, since it is a dormant virus. However,
certain situations in our lives can favor the outbreak of the virus. One
thing is for sure, once infected with the virus, we carry it throughout
our life in our bodies. One can infect other people too. Some people are
more prone to getting the virus than others. Following is a list that
cause break outs
-
Emotional Stress
-
Job
Stress
-
Travel Stress (extreme climate and culture changes)
-
Lack of Sleep
-
Illness, fever or common cold
-
Hormonal Changes
-

How to help prevent Fever Blisters
As with most viral infections, no cure has been found yet. The
only thing we can do is to decrease the pain by
applying Manuka Honey 4-5 times daily and trying to avoid
some of the above
mentioned situations, like stress, lack of sleep or extreme exposure to
sunlight.
“Since I am using Manuka Honey for my
fever blisters, they seem to heal a lot faster. Also they do
not hurt as much as they did before. At first I thought putting honey on
a fever blister was weird, now I am convinced: it is the best thing you
can do.”
