Manuka Honey is a medicinal honey collected from the flower of the wild tea tree bush (leptospermum scoparium) in New Zealand.

Manuka Honey from New Zealand can be used as natural remedy for common sore throat symptoms, colds, canker sores and fever blisters.

Manuka Honey has been researched by Dr. Molan (Senior Lecturer Biochemistry Department, Waikato University, New Zealand) for over 20 years.

Dr. Molan found that Manuka Honey seems to naturally destroy staph aureus, streptococcus (common bacteria present in sore throats, colds, canker sores, fever blisters).

Doctors and nurses in New Zealand, have been using Manuka Honey for decades  to treat their patients for common sore throat symptoms, colds, canker sores and fever blisters. Since ancient times honey has been used as a natural medicine in many cultures. Its antibacterial properties however have only been discovered a century ago.

Honey in fact inhibits a broad spectrum of bacteria. Some reports even show an antifungal activity. Some honeys will work better than others though. The Research Unit at the Waikato University in New Zealand is constantly researching honey as a therapeutic agent.

How does the antibacterial activity work?

The antibacterial activity is due to four major processes or qualities: the osmotic effect, its acidity, the production of hydrogen peroxide in it and the unique phytochemical factor.

Can Diabetics use Honey?

Clinical studies have shown that honey is a better choice for diabetics than sugar. It requires lower levels of insulin compared to regular white sugar and does not raise blood sugar levels as rapidly as white sugar, due to the fructose it contains. However, diabetics should always consult with their doctor first before including honey in their diet. Every diabetic needs to ask their doctor  how much honey is o.k. for them to use as a sweetener in tea or on toast.

Can Honey spoil?

Another reason honey is called a "miracle food" is because in its natural form, it is fully preserved. No organisms can live in it and the product will not decompose. However, if the moisture content is raised above 20%, yeasts can begin to grow and cause fermentation. It can also change texture over time, and separate out into solids (glucose) and liquids (fructose and moisture). Stirring the product will mix up the components and return it to its former creamed state.

We also carry Active Manuka Honey that is used for the following internal and external ailments.

Internally - Applied as natural cure for acid reflux, heartburn remedy, or as natural remedy for stomach ulcers as it fights h. pylori bacteria. Also applied for an upset stomach, duodenal ulcers (peptic ulcers), after food poisoning to coat out the stomach, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.

Externally - Applied as natural antibacterial wound dressing for wounds, burns, ulcers (e.g. decubitus ulcers/ bed sores), sores, scars as well as for the hospital superbug MRSA.
